The market dates from the 19th century, when the Wazemmes district was an independent commune before being annexed by Lille in 1858. Initially a rural area, Wazemmes rapidly urbanised and became known for its working-class population and vibrant community life.

What to see at Marché de Wazemmes

Visitors to Marché de Wazemmes can expect an authentic taste of a different side of Lille, while immersing themselves in a working-class neighbourhood that you otherwise probably wouldn’t visit.

The market consists of a permanent iron-framed covered market hall as well as temporary outdoor stalls set up on Place de la Nouvelle-Aventure. On Sundays, the market has over 400 stalls, spanning the entire Place de la Nouvelle-Aventure and the nearby section of rue Léon-Gambetta. It also extends to part of parvis du Croix, in front of the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church, and the section of rue des Sarrazins at the back of the church.

One of the main attractions of Marché de Wazemmes is its extensive selection of fresh produce. Local farmers and vendors offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices.

In addition to fresh produce, the market has numerous stalls selling an array of food ranging from freshly baked bread and pastries to cheeses, cured meats and seafood. You can also find prepared foods, including local specialties and international dishes, making it a great place to sample the diverse flavours of Lille.

Beyond food, Marché de Wazemmes also has stalls selling clothing and accessories, including shoes, bags and jewellery. The market offers a mix of new and second-hand goods, providing opportunities for bargain hunters and those looking for unique fashion finds.

While it lacks the gourmet focus of Borough Market or the quirky feel of Camden Town and some of the non-food stalls sell a lot of tat, it is still worth a visit if you’re in Lille on a market day and want to experience a different side of the city.

Visiting Marché de Wazemmes

Marché de Wazemmes is in the Wazemmes neighbourhood, around 1.6km southwest of the city centre. You can walk from the city centre in around 25 minutes, although most people take the metro. Gambetta metro station (line 1) is only a few minutes walk from the market.

There are several restaurants and cafes surrounding the market, although there aren’t many tourist attractions in the immediate area. Maison Folie Wazemmes (which is only open when there is a scheduled exhibition) is a five-minute walk from here and you can walk to the Palais des Beaux Arts in around 15 minutes.

The market is open on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Sunday is the busiest day, when it becomes one of the largest markets in France.
