Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille

Lille’s cathedral

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille, or Lille Cathedral, is a striking architectural landmark with a modern design, juxtaposed with elements of traditional Gothic architecture. Construction only began in 1856 and it was not completed until 1999, and while not as ancient as some of Europe’s better known cathedrals, it makes a notable stop when exploring the old city.

What to see at Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille

Although relatively new compared to many European cathedrals, the cathedral offers several notable features and points of interest and it is noted for its unique blend of modern and Gothic architecture.

One of the most striking features of the cathedral is its façade, which combines elements of traditional Gothic architecture with modern design elements. The intricate stone carvings and ornate detailing on the exterior of the building are reminiscent of classic Gothic cathedrals, while the inclusion of contemporary features such as large expanses of glass adds a modern twist.

Inside the cathedral, visitors can explore the vast interior space, which features high ceilings, intricate stained glass windows and ornate decorations. The focal point of the interior is the main altar, which is adorned with sculptures and decorative elements.

One of the highlights of a visit to Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Treille is the opportunity to view the cathedral’s collection of stained glass windows. These windows, created by contemporary artists, depict religious scenes in vibrant colour and intricate detail.

Another notable feature of the cathedral is the crypt, which lies beneath the cathedral’s chapels, choir and transept. Following an extensive restoration project, the crypt has recently been re-opened to the public after a 25-year closure and now houses the Centre d’Art Sacré with exhibits of religious art. Note, the Centre d’Art Sacré has different opening hours compared with the rest of the cathedral.
