L’Hermitage Gantois

Five-star hotel in a 15th-century hospice

L’Hermitage Gantois, is a high-end hotel in a former hospice dating from the 15th century that is now part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. It offers a high standard of accommodation with considerably more character than your average chain hotel.

Originally established in 1462, L’Hermitage Gantois began as a charitable hospice founded to care for the sick and poor. Over time, it evolved into a hospital, operating up until 1995. The building was preserved and transformed into a hotel, blending its rich heritage with modern amenities. Its architecture reflects Lille’s medieval and Renaissance influences.

The hotel’s 88 air-conditioned guest rooms all have comfortable beds, a work desk, a flatscreen TV, tea-and-coffee-making facilities and en suite bathrooms. Most bathrooms come with a bath, meaning that you may need to step into a bath to take a shower, which is less than ideal.

While the Louis XV oak panelling on the walls may not be to everyone’s taste, the hotel’s traditional-style decor reflects the historic nature of the 15th-century building and gives it an atmosphere that makes your stay a memorable one. However, the modern design of some furniture, like the desk and the transparent Philippe Starck Ghost chair, clashes with the traditional decor elsewhere in your room.

Guest rooms are a fairly spacious 20–40m² and the hotel’s three 40m² Hermitage suites feature separate living and sleeping areas.

As you would expect from a five-star hotel, L’Hermitage Gantois has extensive public areas that include a bar and restaurant as well as a spa with a swimming pool.

The Hermitage Bar is a nice spot for a drink and L’Estaminet Gantois, the hotel’s restaurant, is a great spot to try local specialties in a unique environment.

The hotel is located just south of the city centre close to the Hôtel de Ville and Porte de Paris, which are both only a two-minute walk away. Although it is not right in the heart of the city centre, the hotel is only a 10-minute walk to Place du Théâtre and the Vieille Bourse.

Mairie de Lille metro station is only a four-minute walk from the hotel and valet parking is available but it costs €40 per day.
