Musée des Canonniers Sédentaires
Military museum in a former convent
Housed in a former convent, the Musée des Canonniers Sédentaires de Lille showcases a collection of artefacts, weapons and uniforms related to the artillery corps as well as exhibits about the city’s history.
What to see at the Musée des Canonniers Sédentaires
Located within the former couvent des sœurs Urbanistes, this museum offers a comprehensive exploration of Lille’s history from 1000 to 1835 in addition to its exhibits about the Canonniers Sédentaires, the artillery troops tasked with defending Lille and its fortifications.
With a collection of 3,000 objects, the museum’s exhibits highlight the legacy of the Confrérie de Sainte-Barbe, whose members swore an oath in 1483 to defend the city. Notable exhibits include artefacts from the Austrian siege of 1792 and two Gribeauval cannons gifted by Napoleon Bonaparte. You can also see 16th-century maps of the County of Flanders, along with a range of rifles and other weapons spanning from 1777 to 1945.
Visiting the Musée des Canonniers Sédentaires
The museum is around a five-minute walk north of the Westfield Euralille shopping centre and most points of interest in Vieux Lille are between a five- and a 20-minute walk from here.
Both Lille Flandres and Lille Europe metro stations are less than a 10-minute walk from the museum.
It is open afternoons, Monday to Saturday.
Allow around an hour for your visit, perhaps a little longer if you have an interest in military history.
